Bug Season Is Here – Natural Ways to Control Ants
Ants, especially fire ants, can be a real hazard. It’s a good idea to control ants before they start nesting in the clothing or moving into the house through the tiny cracks. Some ants sting and cause allergic reactions, vomiting or pain for some people. Even ants that don’t bite can come inside the home and crawl around the food sources in the kitchen.
If you had any ant bites (even fire ants)
Apply Young Living’s Purification oil topically to stop the burning sting followed by Lavender (neat) for the swelling. You can use this remedy for kids as well. Young kids below 6 years, dilute as necessary.
Natural ways to control ants
Listed below is a few natural ways to kill or prevent ants coming into the house or lodging on the lawn or patio.
- For those of you using Young Living essential oil products, spray diluted Thieves Household Cleaner on the ants and the areas where they were coming in. It eliminates ants effectively, because Thieves oil contains cinnamon along with lemon and other anti-septic oils.
- Peppermint (diluted with water in a spray bottle) can be sprayed around your home’s perimeter and at ant’s entry points. You could also put a drop on a cotton ball and rub it in a circle around the trap. This will deter them from coming inside. As a side note, peppermint spray also works well with spiders.
- Vinegar can be used to destroy ant trails. You can use it diluted with water or straight.
- Cinnamon and black pepper are both being used in garden and indoor insect control. You can try dusting the outdoor nests with either of these spices. Cinnamon is more beneficial as a natural barrier to stop them from coming in. It’s most effective when you find the source of where the ants are coming in.
- Liquid soap diluted with water is an easy way to wipe out your pests while not harming people nor plants. When used outside as a spray, you’ll want to dilute the soap (such as Dr. Bronner’s Organic Castile Soap) — roughly 1 or 2 tablespoons per quart of water — to kill the pests but not your plants.
